Men's Fashion: Timeless vs. Outdated Part 2

When it comes to men's fashion, there are some things that will never go out of style, while others are best left in the past. In this blog, we'll discuss some of the timeless and outdated elements of men's fashion according to a professional tailor.

Wide Lapels: Timeless

Wider lapels have always been a staple in men's fashion and are known for their classic and timeless look. However, in recent years, they have become increasingly popular and are now considered the "cool" thing in men's fashion. This is partly because fashion is cyclical, and trends tend to come back around, and wider lapels are making a comeback.

One reason why wider lapels are popular is that they can add a sense of balance to a man's outfit. They can create a visual proportion between the jacket lapels, the shirt collar, and the tie, which is crucial to achieving a polished and cohesive look. Additionally, wider lapels can make a suit look more substantial which is a key factor in creating a confident and masculine appearance.

Furthermore, as more and more clients request wider lapels, designers, and tailors are incorporating them into their collections. They are also creating variations of the wide lapel, such as peak lapels, which add a touch of sophistication and elegance to a suit. This means that the trend of wider lapels is likely to remain in style for a long time, as it becomes more ingrained in men's fashion.

Overall, wider lapels are a classic and timeless element of men's fashion that is now considered cool and trendy. As more and more men experiment with wider lapels, it's likely that they will continue to be a popular style choice for years to come.

Suspenders/Braces: Timeless

Before we delve into the topic of suspenders or braces making a comeback, it's important to note that the terms "suspenders" and "braces" are often used interchangeably. However, there is a subtle difference between the two. Suspenders typically attach to pants with clips, while braces attach with buttons. It's a small detail, but it's worth noting.

Now, let's talk about suspenders/braces and how they're making a comeback in men's fashion. While they were once seen as outdated, they're now considered cool and stylish. Suspenders/braces are a great accessory for high-waisted pants, which are also making a comeback. Together, they create a sophisticated and classic look that is perfect for any occasion.

When wearing suspenders/braces, it's important to be intentional with how you wear them. Don't go overboard and wear them with every outfit, and avoid being too goofy with them. Instead, pair them with a well-fitted shirt and pants for a polished look. Additionally, consider the color and material of your suspenders/braces. Choose neutral colors like navy, black, or gray, and opt for a high-quality material like leather or silk.

Overall, suspenders/braces are a utilitarian accessory that can elevate your style and add a touch of sophistication to your outfit. Whether you're attending a formal event or simply want to dress up your daily look, suspenders/braces are a great option to consider.

Waistcoats: Outdated

Waistcoats were popular in the early 2000s and 2010s, especially the contrast waistcoat, which I am a fan of. However, they're now a bit outdated, and most people are opting for the two-piece suit instead. There are always exceptions so I shouldn’t say they are completely outdated, for weddings and formal events, a double-breasted waistcoat is still cool, but for business suits and most other situations, a two-piece is the way to go.

Men’s fashion is always changing, but some elements remain timeless while others are best left in the past. Pleats, high-waisted pants, wide lapels, and suspenders/braces are making a comeback and are now considered cool, while slim lapels, full Windsor knots, and waistcoats are outdated. When in doubt, go for something classic and timeless that will never go out of style.
